The turkey’s in the oven, the guests are on their way….now the frantic dash to get yourself ready and figure out what the heck you’re going to wear for your dinner party tonight – not to fret dolls – I’ve got your back!
Whenever I decide to host Christmas at my home, I begin planning months in advance (yes, I’m crazy like that haha). I take having friends and family over very seriously! Last year, I sent a pic of my tablescape to my BFF and her response was “Where the heck is all the food going to go?!” Truth be told… I tend to spend a lot more time on the florals, decoration and my outfit vs. the food.
Since my post last week about ‘Looking Your Best For The Office Party’ went LIVE, I’ve received messages from readers asking me what they should wear when they are hosting a get together and if I could give some sample outfits including older age groups.
Christmas is the one time of year that it’s okay, no matter what age you are, to add a little sparkle; whether it be your outfit or your accessories. Step out of your comfort zone and dress up! Leave those jeans in the closet and reach for a skirt or dress!
Top: BCBG Skirt: Pree Brulee Shoes: Nine West
Necklace: 31Bits Bracelet: Aldo Lip: Nars Shade ‘Cruella’
This is the outfit that I will be wearing on Christmas Eve when I host my dinner party. Whenever I’m hosting, I always find that I get REALLY warm so I prefer to opt for thin layers instead of a heavy sweater. Also, I always keep in mind that my outfit needs to remain practical because cooking a turkey in a floor length gown just isn’t going to cut it!!!
Sequin pants are all the rage this year so the holidays are a great excuse to wear a pair! Some of my choices can be found at BCBG. Cheaper versions include Express, Nordstrom, Forever 21, H&M and Modern Vintage Boutique. Please note that some of these choices are only available in store and not online. You can layer them as seen here or wear them with a longer blouse or top. If this is a little far out for you, choose a sequin top and wear it with a nice fitted pair of black pants – Ricki’s pants always fit my curves the best.
As for ladies 40+ I haven’t forgotten about you! When choosing the right outfit, It’s all about achieving an hourglass silhouette and feeling conformable and confident in the outfit you choose. A pair of Spanx will also help in shaping that hourglass figure.
A wrap dress trims your hips, pushes up those ladies and gives the illusion of a slimmer waist – it’s a real Win Win! I’m currently in love with navy and gold as you could probably tell from above, but I also love these from The Bay: floral blue print from CHAPS, this red Anne Klein number and this printed Anne Klein dress. Nordstrom also has an excellent variety. Look for a dress that is either knee length or just below the knee with sleeves and a print.
I know as us ladies get older, wearing makeup can be a task but I tell ya… make sure you use a good moisturizer, add a little blush on the apples of your cheeks, a nice shadow (this compact is great) and a berry gloss (the ladies in my family love Jane Iredale’s glosses) and you will be well on your way in achieving a holiday look.
I want to send a BIG Thank You to my girlfriend Andrea Porritt for opening up her beautiful home to shoot this post. I hope that these suggestions and tips help you dress for your get together and be sure to share your pics on Instagram using #thesocialgal! I will see you all just before Christmas!
